Cera, the creative mastermind behind The Working Unicorn, created her company earlier this year. Like many warriors who have spent their professional and personal lives smashing obstacles, Cera, an LTBQ+, disabled woman in the construction industry didn’t let the COVID pandemic slow her down. She saw an opportunity to combine her love for construction and art and went for it. “It all began with some doodles of unicorns in different sets of PPE to keep my mind awake during a several hour meeting,” recalls Cera, “I quickly became obsessed and shared the funny drawings with my friends, who loved them and started joking about t-shirts.” Cera says that her company namesake is inspired by a unicorn’s symbolism that she believes can represent “every shape, size, gender, sexuality, race, belief and ability.”
This passion for inclusivity is what drives her even when days can be a bit tough on site. She uses her Instagram page to not only share her beautiful offerings but to also share empowering posts about her personal experience being a woman in construction. Plenty of which has been difficult as a 5’2”, twenty-three year old “who runs the entire scheduling department in North America for one of the largest Renewable empires,” according to one of Cera’s Instagram posts. “I am a fearless, strong, badass boss and I have worked my ass off to get this position. When I didn’t know how to do something, I learned to.” With this head-on approach to life’s adversities, she uses her artwork to bring light and love to those who could use a few bright colors, spunky characters, and positive vibes to their everyday routine. Her transparency, honesty, and wit comes through in her art and transcends barriers through an inclusive approach that also celebrates individuality. An advocate for the tradeswomen who inspire her, she even has a page dedicated on her website featuring members of her “Working Unicorn Crew” with, of course, original portraits by Cera! From T-shirts to stickers, to greeting cards, to masks and mugs, Cera has a crazy huge selection of merchandise that can be specialized for each trade!
